Osteopathy in Italy

Currently the osteopathic profession in Italy is not formally recognised or regulated, however there have been some recent exciting developments.

In Italy there are an estimated 6,000 osteopaths, with around 25 educational institutions (including full and part-time programmes).

Osteopathy is highly regarded by patients and the number of citizens (from infants to the elderly) who use osteopathic treatment is steadily increasing. For this reason, the Health Ministry has expressed the need to standardise osteopathy as an autonomous healthcare profession and has released specific statements to this effect. In June 2016 the Senate voted to support the recognition of osteopathy as a health profession. A vote will now go to the Chamber of Deputies to formalise this proposal.

The largest representative body is the Italian Register of Osteopaths (ROI), followed by the Federal Union of Osteopaths (FeSIOs). Both ROI and FESIOS are the most politically active.
