While osteopathy in Germany is practised by medical doctors, physiotherapists and complementary medicine practitioners, it is not yet recognised or regulated as a distinct profession.
Despite this, osteopathy is a popular healthcare choice and treatment is increasingly being covered by private and statutory health insurance companies.
Training in osteopathy is provided in full-time university courses and part-time courses run by private institutions. The duration and content of the education differs from school to school, as there is currently no common curriculum recognised as the national standard.
Professional organisations like the Bundesverband Osteopathie are working towards the legal recognition of osteopathy as an autonomous primary care profession.
